Summary of the Burgar in 1740 in Dunrossness From Court Cases

Andrew Burger appears in the Sheriff Register of Deeds 1685-1954 58

See details of Deed concerning Andrew Burgar in 1726

Andrew Burgar and four more  Burgar appear in the Baillie Court Rolls of 1731-1735 3. The details are summarized in the table below.

Person Date age living at Comment Court Case

Clause Burgar 1731   Breck Fighting, but discharged No  1
Andrew Burgar 1731   Breck Fighting, but left Shetland temporarily No  1
George Burgar 1731 about 30   Witness, married No  2
Robert Burger 1733   Breck Witness No  3
Robert Burger 1733   Breck Slander No  4
George Burgar 1734     Witness, Officer of Court No  5
George Burgar 1734   Hillwell Witness No  6
George Burgar 1734 35   Witness, Officer of Court, married No  7
John Burgar 1734 29   Witness No  7
Thomas Fea 1735     Fighting No  8
Thomas Fea 1735 26   Witness, married No  9

Thomas Fea has been included in the above list since he is the husband of Katherine Burgher (see later).

It is likely that Claus and Andrew Burgar, both of Breck, are brothers. Since Andrew appears as a responsible adult in 172658  it is assumed that he must be born about 1700 or earlier.   In 1716 Robert Burgar (born about 1665?) was living in Breck.  Thus he is possibly the father of Claus and Andrew.  The Robert (in cases 3 &  4 above) might be their father, who would now be about 65 years old.  Alternatively, he might be a brother of Claus and Andrew, since he also lives at Breck.

George Burgar was a court Official so was probably regarded as a reliable member of the community.  At the time of the Court cases he was in his thirties and was born in 1699, was married, unable to write, and lived in Hillwell.  It is possible that he was a son of John Burgar (born about 1675)  or Laurance Burgar (born about 1665).

John Burgar and George Burgar appear together in one case so perhaps they may be brothers.
