Summary of other Burgar families found to be living in Shetland in 1750.

1.    John Burger

John Burger (a joiner) & Robina Shewan were married in Lerwick on 19/11/1760. 10

Many children were born in 1760s and 1770s.10   It is possible that this John Burger is one of the 3 John Burgher that appear in the Communicants List, but if this is so it is not possible to prove which John he is.

2.    Laurence Burgar

Laurence Burgar appears in Delting at the baptism of his child in 1854.

The Delting Baptism Register62 has the following entry:

George Burgar son of Laurence Burgar & Christian Jamesdaughter was baptised on  25 October 1754.  Comments:       Unmarried.   Christian Jamesdaughter was of Gareton.

Witnesses were Janet Smith & Elizabeth Couper.       George Burgar was sponsor.

The following year the couple married and the Marriage Register for Delting 62 states:

Laurence Burger of Yell    & Christian Jamesdr were married in Delting  on 18 December 1755.

It would seem that Laurence Burgar would be born in about 1725.  That the first child was named George and the sponsor was George Burgar suggests that Laurence Burgar was the son of George Burgar.

There are two possible George Burgar in Dunrossness area in 1749, namely

George Burgar (born 1699) living in Lud, and

George Burgher (born 1680) living in Clumley.

It is thought that he is more likely to be the son of George (born 1680), although there is only circumstantial evidence for this.

Firstly, Laurence Burgar had a daughter, Agnes, who may have been named after Agnes, the daughter of George (born 1680) and the sister of Walter (born about 1725).

Secondly, Laurence Burgar marries at approximately the same date as Walter Burgher (1755 and 1753 respectively) so they may be approximately the same age.  Since Walter is the son of of George Burgher (born 1680) of Clumley, then perhaps Laurence is also a son of this George Burgher (born 1680).

Further details of Laurence Burgar will appear at a later date.
