The list below shows the residents of Dunrossness in 1694. The Burger residents are highlighted in blue and the places occupied are shown in red.

It can be seen that most of the population of Dunrossness are located in relatively large settlements. Some of the population are in smaller more isolated areas. It is assumed that the population is grouped around the more fertile areas.

Two hundred years later many of the places that have a single resident in 1694, are seen to have grown to a much larger population. This suggests that poorer land is slowly being reclaimed and turned into crofts.

Additionally, only about 15% of the tenants had a 'son' ending to their name, often associated with a person being of Viking descent. This may suggest that the Scots proportion of the population was up to 85%.
