After Joseph Burgar died in 1854, his children would have had to fend for themselves.    His daughter, Susan, married Hugh Stynes in 1856 and her two siblings, Alfred and John Burgar, were now living with her.  The fact that her eldest child was called Matilda suggests that their Aunt Matilda (Locke) Burgar had helped to support the family after the death of her brother-in-law, Joseph Burgar.  Unfortunately, Matilda died in 1857, so it is possible that this is when Susan started to look after her brothers.  Her sister, Caroline, who was 14 years old at this time, was in an orphanage.  The eldest brother, Walter (1834-1898) had just married.

Mary Wetherilt married Alfred Burgar a few months after the Census.  At the time she had a baby, George, with her.  It is thought that George was not the child of Alfred.  Grand-daughters of Mary said that there was a special relationship between Mary and her son George.  Sometime in the early 1900s Mary and George went to Kent to try to claim an inheritance, thought to be on the death of his blood father.  Apparently, ‘they were sent away with a flea in their ears’.

This Census shows Alfred and Mary (Wetherilt) Burgar and family.  They were married in 1861 after the 1861 Census.  The marriage Certificate has her father as Richard Wetherilt, baker.  In the 1861 Census Mary was living with her mother, Esther Wetherell, who was born in Limehouse London, and her son George.  George now has the Burgar surname.  The Mary Whithall above, mother-in-law, is thought to be a mistake and should be Esther Wetherilt.    Esther Wetherilt dies in 1876 at the age of  75, which is in agreement with her age in the 1861 Census.

Alfred and Mary Burgar have their youngest children living with them.  Judging from the birth places of the children the family seems to have circled London.   You will see that Alfred himself is said to be born in Chelsea.  This is wrong since he was born in the City.  The older 2 boys of the family, George and Alfred William, are no longer living at home.
