William Bond (1808-) Transported to Australia

Transported Beyond the Seas Convict Index

This document has a list of criminals prosecuted in Hertfordshire who received transportation sentences to Austarlia 1784 - 1866. On page 14 is:

No 178 William Bond aged 24 of Clavering Essex in 1831 at Herts Winter Assizes had a sentence of life with a clemency of death.

The crime was breaking and entering a dwelling house of Thomas Pomfrett, Meesden, stealing 200 yards of Calico £3, 16 yards cotton 16s, 18 yards linen 9s, 14 yards Irish linen 12s, 12 yards printed cotton 6s, 30 pairs stockings £2-5s, 25 lbs of butter £1-5s, 28 lbs of sugar 14s, and other articles £1-10s. The total stolen value was £7-17s.

He travelled on the Hercules II (3), (ship ref h11) containing 11 Hertfordshire convicts. This departed 19/6/1832 arrived 16/10/1832 in New South Wales. The Captain was William Vaughan and the Surgeon was John Edwards.

 

The Australian Joint Copying Project, Microfilm Roll89, Class and Piece HO11/8, page 354 has:

William Bond was convicted at the Herts Gaol Delivery for a term of life on the 28th November 1831.  He was transported on the Hercules which departed for Australia on the 14th June 1832.   He was one of 200 convicts on board ship.  They landed in New South Wales.

The letters CP signify a Conditional Pardon.  This gave the convict his freedom, on condition that he made no attempt to return to England.

 It thus seems that William Bond was pardoned in 1848, but did not return to England. 

There are 3 William Bond in the 1841 Census of New South Wales but we have not investigated which, if any, of them is this William Bond.
