Albert Michael Burgar joined up for the First World War in 1914 when he was 16 years old as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died of wounds on 19th March 1916 at 18 years of age.

Mericourt le Abbé is between the towns of Amiens and Albert near the river Ancre in France. When we visited it in 1987 it had a small red rose bush planted alongside.
