The result of the appalling housing and sanitary conditions was that the death rate was very high.
The number of children who died before the age of 4 years was between 30 and 40% depending on the area. It is not surprising that Walter and Mary lost so many children to the many common diseases, smallpox, tuberculosis, typhus, typhoid.
The average age at death amongst males was about 20 years in many areas of Nottingham. The death rates in Nottingham were 25% higher than the national average.
