Notes on the change of names of villages in the River Roothing or Roding Valley.

Until the last century what is now the River Roding was called the River Roothing.

Thus such places as High Roding was formerly known as High Roothing.  There were 8 Roothing villages: Abbots Roothing, Aythorp Roothing, High Roothing,  Berners Roothing, Beauchamp Roothing, Leaden Roothing, Margaret Rooting and White Roothing.  Additionally there were a few Roothing hamlets.

All of these villages have now become Roding rather than Roothing.

The present day village of Abbess Roding has undergone more complex name changes over the last 100 years.  Until the early 1900s it was Abbots Roothing, then Abbess Roothing and is now Abbess Roding.

Thus in this story, the  names are used interchangeably, but the modern naming is preferred.
