William George Francis Burgar (1911-1988) - British Empire Medal
(Since this was the
author's father I am going to refer to him as Dad). For his exploits he was awarded the BEM ( British Empire Medal ). The Times of the 9th November 1943,
page 7 has under a heading Naval Awards:
The London Gazette states that the King has given orders for the
following appointments and has approved the following awards. The Guardian of Nov 10, 1943, page 8, under the heading Naval Awards: Two ratings receive the
B.E.M. (Military) Able Seaman W.G.F. Burgar and Leading Seaman J.H.J. Hunter
AB W.G.F. Burgar for outstanding leadership and endurance for over 10
days journey in a boat when his ship was torpedoed.
I clearly remember going to Buckingham Palace when I was about 6 years old to see Dad receive the medal from the King, George V1. All the medal recipients were allowed to bring two guests, so Mum and myself went along. As far as I remember there were less than 100 in the audience, sitting in very plush red and gold chairs. The King was at the front handing out the medals as the recipients filed by.
The BEM

The British Empire Medal was awarded for meritorious service which warranted such a mark of royal appreciation. The medal was awarded to subordinate personnel only: non-commissioned officers, Petty Officers and men, who were eligible for the military division of the various levels of this order.
